The coronation of poppea
Set in the early 1870s, this adaptation of Monteverdi’s The Coronation of Poppea will take place in the desired evening spot of the Victorian Music Hall. Taking inspiration from the many music halls in London throughout the Victorian period, my characters are reimagined to fit in this setting. For this reason, my costuming will focus on evening wear of the period, as a method of expressing the wealth and status of each character. The silhouette of my costumes will be historically accurate, with corresponding accessories and millinery in the limited colour palette of red and cream, with black embellishment. However, textile manipulation will not follow a totally historically accurate visual but will be inspired by victorian floral symbolism to enhance the characteristics of each character and link each character through their textile embellishment.
